According to KTLA 5’s Sandra Mitchell, a man in a Bentley drove up and told her that he is in the process of purchasing the property and that he paid to have the “Hell House” torn down. Now, community members are delighted that city officials stepped up. A vacant house that caused major problems for a local community has now been reduced to rubble.

Instead, when word of the incident swept along the Strip, instead of damaging them, it seemed to fuel Guns N’ Roses’ reputation as rock & roll outlaws, the real, no-fucks-given kind of deal that so many other bands were just throwing shapes pretending to be. A wild rumour circulated that the charges had been dropped after Axl slept with the mother of the girl concerned. No one seemed bothered that a 15-year-old had been through a harrowing experience, whatever the detail.
Everything in the film is framed by a group of documentary-style talking heads, discussing the tragic attempt of their friend Margot (Bridget Rose Perrotta) to make a true-crime exposé of the Carmichael Manor. This is the site of what, in 1989, appears to have been a double, perhaps triple murder, committed by either father Arthur Carmichael or his son Patrick, the latter of whom in Cognetti’s pileup of Lovecraftian lore turns out to have worked at the cursed hotel. But after the slaughter at the manor, both men disappeared, never to be seen again, into the surrounding snowy woods. Along with her estate-agent girlfriend Rebecca (Destiny Leilani Brown) and mentally ill brother Chase (James Liddell), the suicidally undaunted Margot decides to spend five nights on the supposedly haunted property, cameras at the ready. In 1970, the property was purchased by aging billionaire Rudolph Deutsch, who wished to have it explored in order to determine the nature of a potential afterlife.
Or at least, you did at first… Once word got out that the alley behind the Hell House was deserted at night, a tiny urban black hole in the midst of West Hollywood, it became the place to go once the clubs closed for the evening. “Between us and the other bands, the alley began to attract a lot of drugs, booze, girls and other musicians. Strippers from the neighbourhood constantly came by, often bringing Quaaludes, Valium, coke or booze to share,” recounted Duff. Soon, from the early hours until daybreak, hundreds of people were gathered there to party.
There were rumours that the garage was under surveillance from undercover officers, and also the LAPD vice squad. Despite Axl’s bravado, he and Slash quickly skipped the scene when reality — and the possibility of a mandatory five-year jail sentence — hit home. Then, in December 1985, came a dark and serious incident that signalled the end of the Hell House era.
A 15-year-old girl named Michelle entered the rehearsal space one day, and, according to an interview Axl later gave to the LA Weekly, “started fucking with our equipment.” There was some kind of scuffle and the girl ended up running naked along Sunset Boulevard. She’d hung around the Hell House periodically, along with lots of others, and had found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Havel's tapes document the company's arrival at the Abaddon Hotel as they set it up for Halloween.
However, before any action was taken, the “Hell House” caught fire on Thanksgiving Day, much to the dismay of neighbors who told KTLA that they had been telling the city that the house was a public safety hazard for months. Residents complained to the city that homeless people were using the property as a drug house and demanded action at City Council meetings. Construction crews tore down what West Hollywood residents dubbed the “Hell House” on Thursday, bringing a long period of violent interactions and loud arguments in the middle of the night with homeless people to an end.
I'm not the most “feeling the feelings” guy when it comes to picking up on stuff. But, when I get freaked out, there are some vibes there for sure. He also got barred briefly from the Rainbow — some achievement — and the band earned a reputation for drunken obnoxiousness, bumming drinks, starting fights, aggressively panhandling at their own gigs. The West Hollywood Sheriff’s Department became aware of the parties in the Gardner Street alley, and heard the tales of drug dealing and other anti-social behavior. And like the creation of a star, the Hell House was to suck in a lot of dark matter before it emitted the white heat and light of the Guns N’ Roses who were ready to make their first records. There are always torrid tales that surround the creation of a rock & roll legend, but in the Hell House bad things happened, things that do not reflect well on anyone involved — however famous and lauded they were to become.
